Interdenominational Church Ushers of Georgia Association, Inc.
The Interdenominational Church Ushers of Georgia Association, Inc. (ICUG) is a statewide organization dedicated to promoting excellence in church ushering across denominations. Affiliated with the National United Church Ushers Association of America (NUCUAA), ICUG provides training, fellowship, and resources to church ushers, emphasizing a uniform and silent method of ushering. The organization also offers educational scholarships for youth, leadership development, and opportunities for networking and spiritual growth. With a mission to enhance the role of ushers in worship services, ICUG fosters unity and professionalism among church ushers throughout Georgia.
As members of the National Organization, we are afforded the opportunity to fellowship with ushers in 30 different states. Our National Organization has a membership of over 30,000 church ushers. It fosters a unified silent method of ushering. An Usher, who has been trained and is a member of our National Organization, can assist ushers in another Member State or local church.
The State of Georgia has been a member of the National Organization since 1979. We have a diverse membership that includes several cities such as Atlanta, Decatur, Carrollton, Norcross, and Savannah, Georgia. Our state organization is proudly affiliated with the Southern Region of our National Organization.
The Southern Region Meeting takes place on the fourth weekend in April, while the National Convention is held during the last full week of July each year. Additionally, our State Convention occurs in June, where all committees and departments present annual reports detailing their activities over the past twelve months.
The Interdenominational Church Ushers of Georgia Association, Incorporated, an affiliate of the National United Church Ushers Association of America, Incorporated, is a lay Organization whose purpose is to promote church ushering throughout the state of Georgia without regard to race, creed, or denomination. The Organization is committed to the use and perpetuation of a uniform method of church ushering. The Organization strives to stimulate interest in church ushering; to promote growth through the development and implementation of innovative programs; and to raise the spiritual, moral, and social awareness of its membership.
The National United Church Ushers Association of America, Inc. was founded in 1919 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania by Elijah Hamilton. Its original purpose was to break down the barriers of discrimination and prejudice which had seriously hampered the church’s effort to perform its mission in the world. Its leaders believed that the mission of the Church was to lead all mankind to Christ and that the Church Usher plays a very definite part in this mission. Joining together to further this common Christian cause was essential to the progress of individual church usher boards, because the problems faced in one church are also often the problems in other ushers’ churches. Through conferences, conventions, and other organization-sponsored programs, our members can exchange ideas and learn new ways to deal with these problems while also enhancing the role that they play in helping their church ministry. It is our aim to train our members in the technique and attitude of a good usher so that they may be of greater service to their church and pastor. This training is done with the hope that through their courteous service and Christ-like manner, many new members shall be added to their church’s roll. All churches and local church usher organizations interested in joining the NUCUAA must apply for membership with the state organization chartered by the NUCUAA to have jurisdiction over their area. If there is not a chartered stated organization in their area, the NUCUAA will provide assistance in establishing a state organization.

The Ministry of Church Ushering is a sacred and powerful responsibility. A Church Usher helps the Pastor by making sure all members and guest are greeted warmly and by doing what is necessary to put guests in the right fame of mind for worship. Church Ushers must possess a spirit of meekness and humility and must be well-trained in all aspects of the techniques of Church Ushering in order to master the situations that may arise during a church service.
